“ My artist posted that they’re taking part in a flash day - what does that mean? ”
You may have seen that we recently hosted a flash day and if you were confused about why or what they are, here’s everything you need to know for next time!
WHERE DID ‘FLASH DAYS’ ORIGINATE?
While there’s no record of the ‘first-ever’ flash day - the origin is widely considered to be among the travelling circuses and carnivals of the 1800s. Tattoo artists at these events would pre-draw designs to attract crowds and patrons. Think of it like a more permanent version of getting your face painted at a carnival!
WHAT ARE FLASH DAYS NOW?
Flash days now look a little different. They’re often used for studios and artists to celebrate studio milestones or seasonal holidays. For example, our recent Valentine’s Day Flash Event. They involve limited designs on a walk-in basis and are usually themed to whatever is being celebrated.
WALK-IN, FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVE
Flash days are usually operated in a way where you show up and it’s first-come first-serve. You’ll walk in, if your chosen artist is available you’ll then pick your design and get going. If they’re particularly busy you may be asked to leave your details so you can be contacted when your artist is available again.
Some studios may employ an appointment system and book you in prior to the flash day and give you a time slot to arrive in. This will vary on artist and studio so always make sure you read event details prior to a flash day event. You can also keep an eye on their social media to see if they end up with spaces left for the event and you can pop along and get tattooed.
LIMITED DESIGNS AVAILABLE
During flash days, artists will have specific flash available to choose from. These are usually smaller, simpler designs that take less time to tattoo which allows them to fit more people in throughout the day. Designs are often repeatable but this depends on the artist. Some artists will still stick to one-of-a-kind designs that only you will have. If you’re unsure, you can always ask your artist how it’ll work for their flash day.
Some flash days will also specify set placements to keep things straight-forward. They may advertise that it’s arms and legs only if this is the case - this just limits the different ways they need to set up in between clients and keeps the entire day running smoothly.
SET PRICES
Designs will usually be priced in a set way depending on the size or level of detail in each individual design. They will also be in set sizes to keep pricing the same if they’re doing repeatable designs. This will usually be advertised beforehand so that everyone can show up on the day prepared.
EXCLUSIVE EXTRAS
During a flash day there may also be exclusive extras available. This could be merch, such as t-shirts, goodie bags, prints, stickers etc. If these are available the studio hosting the event will likely include it in all the advertising for the flash day - so keep a look out!
